Announcements from the Counseling Office:
Any students interested in attending a military academy is advised to attend the 8th annual Military Service Academy Day hosted by Phil Roe. This event will take place on September 16, 2017 at Greeneville High School at 9:30am. Students will have the opportunity to speak with representatives from all military academies and gather valuable information on the admissions process. For more information, please call 423-247-8161 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Any senior that would like to be considered for a Roan Scholarship nomination must submit a resume to their counselor by September 8th. Science Hill will nominate two students for one of ETSU’s highest scholarships. The two SHHS nominees must have their applications completed and submitted by Oct 11th. See your counselor for more info.
Science Hill High School is excited to offer three online courses in this fall semester. Wellness is a one credit course, and Personal Finance (1/2 credit) and Personal Fitness (1/2 credit) are taken one per nine weeks to total one credit when completed. Online courses are taken in addition to the four classes that are already in a student schedule for fall. Students who are interested should see a counselor for the enrollment form. Course enrollment closes on Monday, August 14.
Not sure why you would take an online course? One reason to consider an online course is that it will complete a required course and allow you more opportunities to take electives or advanced coursework during the traditional school day. Not sure if an online course is right for you? Students who are most successful in online courses are self-disciplined, able to seek support from the teacher when needed, and comfortable using various technologies. Still have more questions? See your counselor or one of the teachers of the online courses—Mrs. Cutlip, Mr. Vanthournout, and Mr. Moore.
SHHS will be hosting our second annual College Admissions night in the auditorium and cafeteria on 8/17 from 6-8pm. The SHHS counselors will share information regarding college admissions, scholarship searches, and more at 6pm in the auditorium. Once the counselors are finished, parents and students will be dismissed to the cafeteria to meet college admissions counselors from more than 12 popular colleges and ask any specific questions they may have at that time. This is a wonderful opportunity to begin making relationships with college admission counselors and begin the college admissions process! Parents are encouraged to attend. We hope to see you there! Some of the colleges that have indicated they are attending include: UT-Knoxville, University of Alabama, ETSU, Emory & Henry, Furman, Milligan, TN Center of Applied Technology, Tennessee Tech, NE State and more!!
Applications are now available for any rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors that may be interested in the Youth Leadership program sponsored by the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce. Applications can be found in room 527. Please see your counselor for more information.
All students that plan on participating in college athletics once they graduate should visit the NCAA website for info on academic changes that will be in place once you graduate.
